The St. Adalbert Foundation for Research in Central and Eastern Europe, under the patronage of Cardinal Péter Erdő, Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, organized a conference on the church aspects of the transition in Central Europe.
A special interest for the conference was the fact that the Foundation organized it in the spirit of appreciating the linguistic specificity of the region. The twenty-four speakers from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Hungary gave presentations in their own languages and were able to get involved in the discussions by simultaneous translation.
The lectures – after a few introductory lectures on the communist period – revealed church life in the years immediately preceding and immediately following the change of regime.
Highlights were the lectures of František Mikloško, one of the organizers of the Slovak underground church, Ádám Somorjai OSB, a former employee of the Pontifical Secretariat for almost twenty years, and the presentation of László Surján, honorary president of the KDNP in Hungary.
